A man has been sentenced to one year ten months today (16 March) for multiple offences including assault and non-fatal strangulation.

Jamie Pitt, 33, of no fixed address appeared at Carlisle Crown Court and pleaded guilty at the first day of his trial to the following offences:

  • Assault by beating
  • Non-fatal strangulation

Pitt pleaded guilty to criminal damage and witness intimidation at an earlier hearing.

He was also given a restraining order.

The court heard that police received a dropped 999 call from the victim in which Pitt had entered her property before leaving. Officers attended and ensured the property was secure.

Pitt has returned to the address whilst the victim was on the phone to a friend and forced entry to the property through a window.

The victim has attempted to escape when Pitt has grabbed the victim and strangled her twice where she almost blacked out. Pitt whist doing this has made comments that he would kill the victim.

Pitt also tried to force water on the victim by pouring it down her throat.

Whilst this was ongoing her friend on the phone heard what was going on and called the police.

The victim managed to escape the address in her vehicle, which Pitt thew a chair at causing damage to a windscreen.

Whilst remanded in custody Pitt made a call to the victim from a withheld number and made threats towards the victim, a further 11 calls were also received by the victim which she did not answer.

Detective Constable Anna Pickthall from Cumberland CID said “Pitt is a dangerous offender who intentionally strangled the victim twice almost causing her to black out leaving her in fear of her life.

“He also attempted to intimidate the victim from prison making multiple calls and making contact through family and sending gifts.

“I would encourage anyone who has been subject to offences of this nature to come forward so that our officers can investigate. You will be supported throughout our investigation.”
