Two men have been sentenced after a swift police investigation saw them arrested, charged, and brought before the courts within 36 hours of an attempted ATM theft in Carlisle.

Tjay O’Neil, 35, of no fixed address, and Dean Smith, 33, also of no fixed address, appeared at Carlisle Crown Court today (14 October), where they were sentenced for their involvement in an attempted raid at Morrisons on Kingstown Road, Carlisle.

The incident took place shortly after 6.30am on Tuesday 15 September, when the two men attempted to steal an ATM from the supermarket.

After failing to remove the machine, the men drove away from the scene in a lime green flatbed vehicle. A short time later, officers subsequently stopped the vehicle and arrested the men.

The investigation progressed rapidly, with both men arrested, charged and appearing before magistrates the next day.

Key evidence included the electronic monitoring tag which O’Neil was wearing and placed him at the scene of the crime.

Smith admitted burglary with intent to steal, criminal damage, drink driving and dangerous driving. He was handed a 33-month custodial sentence.

O’Neil admitted burglary with intent to steal and criminal damage. He was jailed for two years.

Detective Inspector Lee Brumpton, Cumberland CID, said:

“This case demonstrates the determination of our officers to investigate cases quickly and bring those responsible before the courts.

“Within 36 hours of this incident, both men had been arrested, charged, and had appeared before the courts.

“That speed was made possible in part by members of the public who came forward with vital information. I would like to thank everyone who assisted our investigation.

“Attempting to steal an ATM in this way is a serious offence, and we will act decisively to identify those responsible, gather the evidence and ensure they face justice.

“This outcome sends a clear message that we will pursue offenders and work quickly to protect our communities.”
